What does the job involve?
The graduate scheme at Nationwide Building Society offers a wide range of opportunities across the business through a series of three eight-month placements. I am currently working as a Senior Member Relations Manager in our Member Service Department dealing with customer complaints. My role is primarily one of people management rather than hands-on complaint handling. It is my responsibility to make sure that my team are fully trained in what they do, and are compliant in line with both Society and FSA regulation.

It is my job to make sure that they are happy at work and that they are getting the appropriate training and development necessary to help them meet their career goals. What do you enjoy about your job?
No day is ever the same. What is the most challenging aspect?
As a line manager, I am often the first person people come to with questions regarding any given task. With a constantly changing team, which means relatively high levels of inexperience, this can be a real drain on your energy and resources. The worst part?

What advice would you give to readers considering a job in your field?
Be open minded; Banking is far from just numbers. In fact, the visible side of the finance industry veils massive behind-the-scenes operations. There is so much opportunity within larger financial institutions ranging from sales to public relations, marketing to treasury functions, customer service to commercial operations, and far more besides. It doesn’t matter if your background is in economics, business management, psychology or English, there will be a role for you within the banking industry and it is simply a case of getting in to see just what is available to you.
