Anjool Malde - Graduate of the Year 2005 Runner Up

Age: 21
University: University of Oxford
Degree: Geography

Few people can claim they had their dissertation research published in the national media, but for Anjool Malde it's a fairly everyday experience. From raising over £10,000 for charity as a telephone fundraiser, to setting up a music company to promote unsigned musicians, Anjool isn't fazed by challenges. Alongside his degree in Geography at the University of Oxford, Anjool has held over 20 positions of responsibility on various societies, and even co-founded one, which raised awareness of the Indian religion Jainism.

Anjool is keen not to be pigeonholed by his degree, and deliberately took a diverse approach to his interests at University, building up skills in several areas.

He says he never wasted a moment of university life, which is clear from his extensive CV. He worked as a music reviewer for the BBC and helped promote faith and the arts as a BBC correspondent. He has also worked on the editorial team of Oxford's two newspapers, and presented the news on the student radio.

Events organising is another area Anjool has been involved in, and as treasurer for the United Nations Association he helped host various events, and ran a black tie ball as Secretary of the Geography society.

Anjool believes that planning and hard work are the key to achieving your goals, saying: "I have learnt that the sky is the limit since going to university, and that with successful time management skills one can achieve so much more."

8th July 2009

Everyone at Real World is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Anjool’s death.

The Real World Graduate of the Year Awards were established to celebrate the achievements of graduates who had made the most of their time at university. Now in their sixth year, the awards are still going strong, but Anjool’s entry in the second year stays strongly embedded in the memory of all those involved at the time. His entry epitomised the very best of the UK’s young entrepreneurs today – full of dynamism, verve and enthusiasm and an indomitable spirit of adventure. Anjool was a deserving winner who stood out, not only for his exceptional abilities, but also for his engaging and memorable presence. Long after his win, Anjool was an enthusiastic ambassador for the awards, encouraging other students to enter and make their mark.

At this year’s awards ceremony in September we plan to inaugurate a fitting award to Anjool’s memory, and my sincere condolences go to his family and many friends who will be feeling this loss so deeply.
