Actuarial

Start salary: £25,000 - 35,000 as a student actuary. £35,000 - 45,000 once qualified
Professional salary: Upwards of £100,000
Required qualifications: Usually at least a 2:1, with a B or above at A-level maths
Jobs available: In 2010, actuarial careers had over 21,000 members but it's seen a drop by -0.8%*

Actuaries are essentially financial risk assessors, working for a wide range of industries (health-care, pensions, insurance, banking, investments) to predict the economic future. The roles available are varied, ranging from roles in investment banks to consultancy roles.

Actuaries must be highly numerate, able to problem solve and think strategically. They must have an understanding of finance and business, and usually come from a numerate degree background (Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Chemistry, Physics) which is followed by actuarial work as a trainee.
