Start salary: £18,000 to £25,000
Professional salary: £50,000+ (in less than 6 years)
Required qualifications: Preferably a maths-related degree though any subject considered, and A-level maths. Membership of ICAEW/ICAS/ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland respectively) is usually required.

Accountants audit assets, balance books and cumulate capital for companies around the globe. Accountancy is, technically, a branch of mathematical science concerned with business. As well as keeping on top of their figures, accountants must be able to navigate a sea of forms and red tape and use numbers to identify the causes of a businesses success or failure.
Many accountants enter the profession with a degree, though there are many non-graduate options as well. Trainee accountants will complete a training contract or training agreement with an employer authorised by a professional body such as the ICAEW, ICAS or ICAI.
Work, in the financial sector, can be highly varied - high level accountants can get posted all over the globe and work on all manner of interesting projects. In a world where everyone speaks money, there will always be a need for someone who can read the numbers.
